5 apps that will make you a better writer

It’s true, there’s pretty much an app for everything - from delivered-to-your-door coffee or a living room massage. So, it’s not surprising that there’s a TON of apps designed to improve your writing.

If you’re reading this - hunched over a laptop screen and unsure of where to start - we’ve got you covered. Also, maybe see a chiropractor.

1) Grammarly

Have you just finished writing an entire block of words, but you need a second eye? Luckily, with Grammarly you don’t have to meticulously comb through every single word choice, punctuation error, and embarrassing spelling mistake (we all make them - don’t worry).

Grammarly acts as a lovely, but critical, set of second eyes, spotting common grammatical errors and providing suggestions to improve the tone, clarity, and fluency of your writing. As well as being a great little tool for quick editing and proofreading, Grammarly will save you lots of precious time where you could be learning how to crochet or comfortably enjoying your next post-lockdown identity crisis. Remember though, Grammarly won’t catch everything.

2) Elevate

Dubbed Apple’s App of the Year, Elevate’s award-winning brain training tool and 35+ games  help to enhance your skills as well as providing the option to track your progress. This app is perfect for anyone who gets a lot out of rewards and positive reinforcement. When you successfully complete a task, you get a cute little virtual sticker to show off to your other writer mates, or just your mum. Who cares! Progress is progress, babe.

From spelling, to vocabulary, Elvate not only works to sharpen your writing but to also boost your productivity which, in turn, will build your confidence as an aspiring writer!

3) Hemingway

Ever read back a piece of your writing only to find that you’ve somehow written a 7-line sentence, a paragraph of waffle, and a verb so niche that it doesn’t even make sense in the context?

This one’s for you. With an emphasis on writing strong yet simple sentences with a clear point, Hemingway pinpoints key edits of your written work to make it more concise and easier to read. Using very aesthetically-pleasing colour codes, Hemingway categorizes its edits to highlight areas where your writing may need a little extra love. Whether that’s bringing attention to too much passive voice, places where you could use a simpler synonym, or sentences that are way too dense - Hemingway is perfect for writers looking to enhance and perfect their composing skills!

4) Airstory

Whether you’re an academic, a journalist, a copywriter, or a blogger - Airstory is great for anyone who finds good organisation deeply satisfying. In virtually organising all your different notes from all your different projects, you can effectively create and keep a running library of all your research and notes all in one place.

No more scribbled down ideas on a napkin and nonsensical gibberish typed into your phone’s very crowded Notes app! Instead, Airstory encourages you to seek freedom in the blank page to then fill it up with brilliant ideas, countless data and crazy inspiration!

5)  Scrivener

Scrivener is the go-to app for writers of all kinds. After banishing your first-page-fright with its accessible and easy to use layout, Scrivener seeks to help you grow your writing organically, idea by idea. Whether you’re a careful planner or a lunatic (like me) who just dives headfirst into a piece, this app is tailored for you to work your way.

Now, while this app is magical it won’t tell you how to actually write. Instead, it will provide everything you need to start writing and keep writing which isn’t a bad place to be in as an aspiring writer.

Alternatively, you can hire a freelance copywriter that writes words for you (hi!). Just head to our contact page for a catch-up.
